为 introduces the purpose or beneficiary of an action: 为考试复习, 为家人做饭, 为朋友高兴. It is more purpose/reason focused than 给. 给 often marks the receiver of a concrete action, while 为 explains why or for whose sake the action is done. In daily speech, 为了 is also common before a purpose; 为 is shorter and slightly more formal.
