Resumo da lição
Formula: Subject + 想/要 + Verb. 想 = soft wish or desire (feel like doing). 要 = firm plan or necessity (intend/need to do). Key distinction: 我想去 (I'd like to go — open) vs 我要去 (I'm going to go — committed). Note: 想 + noun is wrong; use 要 + noun for ordering. 不要 = don't! (command). Model: 我想去吃火锅。/ 明天我要早起。
想 (xiǎng) expresses a DESIRE or WISH — something you feel like doing or would love to do. It carries a soft, optional feeling: 我想吃火锅 (I feel like eating hotpot — it would be nice), 我想去旅游 (I'd like to travel). 想 can also mean 'to miss (someone)' when used without another verb: 我想你 (I miss you).
要 (yào) expresses a stronger INTENTION, PLAN, or NEED. It suggests commitment or that you intend to make it happen: 我要去买菜 (I'm going to buy groceries — it's planned), 你要好好吃饭 (You need to eat properly — there's an obligation). In some contexts, 要 also means 'to need/want' as a full verb: 我要一杯水 (I want/need a glass of water).
Key contrast: 想 is about what you FEEL LIKE doing. 要 is about what you INTEND or NEED to do. They can both appear in the same sentence: 我想去,但我要先做作业 (I want to go, but I need to finish my homework first).
Negation: 不想 = don't feel like / don't want to. 不要 = don't want to; also used as a command meaning 'don't!' (不要说话!= Don't talk!). This is different from 不用 (no need to).
Do NOT confuse 要 (want/plan) with 要…了 (expressing something is about to happen, covered in later lessons).
Estrutura gramatical
Subject + 想 + verb (wish or feeling)
Expresses a wish, desire, or something the subject feels like doing. Softer and less committed than 要.
下课以后,我想去吃火锅。
Xià kè yǐhòu, wǒ xiǎng qù chī huǒguō.
After class, I feel like going to eat hotpot.
你想买什么礼物给妈妈?
Nǐ xiǎng mǎi shénme lǐwù gěi māma?
What gift do you want to buy for your mom?
想 must be followed by a VERB. 一杯水 is a noun. Use 要 + noun (for ordering/requesting) or 想 + verb + noun.
不要 means 'don't!' (a prohibition). 不用 means 'no need to' (removing obligation). To tell someone they don't need to be nervous, use 不用.
Complete a lacuna:
Estrutura gramatical
Subject + 要 + verb (plan or necessity)
Expresses a firm intention, plan, or something that needs to be done.
明天我要早起,因为有考试。
Míngtiān wǒ yào zǎo qǐ, yīnwèi yǒu kǎoshì.
I need to wake up early tomorrow — there's an exam.
他要去书店买参考书。
Tā yào qù shūdiàn mǎi cānkǎoshū.
He is going to the bookstore to buy reference books.
If it's a firm plan or necessity (need to wake early for an exam), use 要. 想 sounds like a casual wish; 要 shows commitment.
