Linking adverbs 还/也 (关联副词)
也 (yě) means 'also/too' — it links two parallel facts about the same or different subjects. 还 (hái) means 'also/in addition/still' — it adds something extra or shows a state continues. Both come before the verb, never before the subject.

Resumo da lição
Formula: Subject + 也/还 + verb. Meaning: 也 = also/too (same thing is equally true); 还 = also/in addition/still (something extra or ongoing). Usage: both come after the subject and before the verb. Model sentences: 他也会说中文。/ 我要米饭,还要一碗汤。 Never put 也/还 before the subject.
Linking adverbs 也 and 还 connect related pieces of information within a sentence or across sentences.
也 (also / too): • Used to say that something is EQUALLY true for another person or situation: 我喜欢音乐,她也喜欢。(I like music; she likes it too.) • Can link two facts about the SAME subject: 他会说法语,也会说日语。(He can speak French and also Japanese.) • Position: ALWAYS before the main verb, after the subject: Subject + 也 + verb. • Cannot start a sentence alone: 也我会说中文。→ 我也会说中文。
还 (also / in addition / still): • Adds something EXTRA on top of what was already mentioned: 我要米饭,还要一碗汤。(I want rice and also a bowl of soup.) • Can also mean 'still' — a state continues: 他还没来。(He still hasn't come.) • In questions: 还有什么?(What else is there?) • Position: same as 也 — before the main verb, after the subject.
Key difference between 也 and 还: — 也: emphasizes SIMILARITY or EQUALITY ('the same is also true') — 还: emphasizes ADDITION ('on top of that, there's more')
Example comparison: • 她也喝咖啡。(She drinks coffee too — same as someone else.) • 她还喝咖啡。(She also drinks coffee — in addition to other drinks she mentioned.)
When NOT to use: — Never place 也/还 before the subject: 也她会说中文。 — Do not use 也 and 还 together casually: 我也还要去。(Choose one based on meaning.)
Estrutura gramatical
也/还 + predicate
也 links equal facts (also/too); 还 adds extra information or shows continuation (also/in addition/still).
他会说英语,也会说法语。
Tā huì shuō Yīngyǔ, yě huì shuō Fǎyǔ.
He can speak English and also French.
我要米饭,还要一碗汤。
Wǒ yào mǐfàn, hái yào yī wǎn tāng.
I want rice and also a bowl of soup.
我是学生,他也是学生。
Wǒ shì xuésheng, tā yě shì xuésheng.
也 must come AFTER the subject and BEFORE the verb. It cannot start a sentence or come before the subject. This is a direct translation error from English 'Also, I can speak Chinese.'
When saying that another person wants the SAME thing, use 也 (similarity/equality). 还 would imply she wants noodles IN ADDITION to something else she already wanted.
Complete a lacuna:
I am a student, and he is also a student.
Use 也 to connect two parallel negatives: 'I have no money and no time either.' Do not mix 不 and 没有 in this pattern.
