据说 means “it is said” or “I heard that.” Use it when the source is indirect and you are not fully confirming the information.

据说 introduces information that comes from what other people say, news, or general talk. It helps the speaker avoid claiming direct certainty. Do not use it for something you personally saw or know for sure. Compared with 据我所知, 据说 points to outside reports, while 据我所知 limits the statement to the speaker’s own knowledge.

Using 据说 while claiming full certainty: 据说，他一定已经到了。Avoid strong certainty with 据说 unless the source is clearly authoritative. Say 据说，他已经到了.
