biànhuà tài
Change-of-state aspect (变化态)
A sentence-final 了 signals that a situation has changed — something new has happened or a state has shifted from before. It is not past tense. It means 'things are different now.'

Ringkasan pelajaran
Formula: Subject + adjective/verb + 了 (sentence final). Meaning: a new situation has come about — things have changed. Key usage: use when something is different NOW compared to before. Model sentence: 天黑了,我们回家吧。 Exception: do not use 了 for permanent states. Negate with 不...了 (no longer) or 还没 (not yet changed).
The change-of-state 了 (变化态) is placed at the end of a sentence or clause to indicate that a new situation has come about — something that was not true before is now true (or vice versa).
Common sentence patterns: 1. Subject + Adjective + 了: 我累了 (I am tired now — I wasn't before). 天黑了 (It got dark). 2. Subject + Verb + 了 (at sentence end): 他来了 (He's here now — he wasn't before). 下课了 (Class is over). 3. Subject + 是 + Noun + 了 (identity change): 她是妈妈了 (She is a mom now).
Key distinction — 变化态 了 vs completive 了 (动态了): - Completive 了 goes directly after the verb: 他买了两个面包 (He bought two pieces of bread — action completed). - Change-of-state 了 goes at the end of the sentence: 他来了 (He's here now — situation changed).
When NOT to use 变化态 了: do not add 了 to describe a permanent or timeless state. You would not say 太阳是热的了 to describe the sun — it has always been hot, no change occurred.
Negation: use 还没 + verb to say something has not yet changed: 她还没来 (She hasn't come yet — the situation has not changed).
Pola tata bahasa
Subject + adjective + 了 (a quality has newly become true)
The subject has entered a new state — something that was not true before is now true.
我累了,想休息一下。
Wǒ lèi le, xiǎng xiūxi yīxià.
I'm tired now — I need a break.
天黑了,我们回家吧。
Tiān hēi le, wǒmen huí jiā ba.
It's dark now — let's go home.
她病。
了 cannot be the only word after the subject. The sentence needs a verb or adjective to express what changed. 雨了 is not grammatical.
变化态 了 describes a current new state. For describing a past feeling that is no longer relevant, use past time words with regular adjective predicates, not 了.
Isi bagian yang rumpang:
Tā bìng le.
She has gotten sick.
Pola tata bahasa
Subject + verb + 了 (at sentence end — new situation)
An action has occurred, creating a new situation that did not exist before.
下课了,同学们都出去了。
Xià kè le, tóngxuémen dōu chūqu le.
Class is over — all the students went out.
To negate a change of state, use 不...了 (no longer in that state) or 还没 + verb (the change hasn't happened yet). Do not use 没 directly with 变化态 了.
