Affirmative-negative questions (正反问句)
An affirmative-negative question (正反问句) repeats the verb or adjective in both its positive and negative forms — V + 不/没 + V — to ask a natural yes/no question. It sounds more conversational than a 吗 question and must NEVER have 吗 added to it.
Contoh utama
你明天来不来?我们等你的!
Nǐ míngtiān lái bù lái? Wǒmen děng nǐ de!
Are you coming tomorrow? We'll be waiting for you!

Ringkasan pelajaran
Formula: V + 不 + V (present/future) OR V + 没 + V (past) | Meaning: asks yes or no, more natural in speech than 吗 | Key rule: NEVER add 吗 | Answer: say the verb (来 or 不来) | Model: 你明天来不来?(Are you coming tomorrow?) / 他去没去学校?(Did he go to school?)
**What it means:** A 正反问句 places the positive form and negative form of a verb or adjective side by side to ask a yes/no question. It literally mirrors both possibilities at once.
**Two main patterns:** 1. V + 不 + V — for present/future/habitual: 你来不来? 你喜不喜欢? 天气冷不冷? 2. V + 没 + V — for asking whether a past action happened: 他去没去学校? 你吃没吃早饭?
**For adjectives:** Adj + 不 + Adj: 今天冷不冷? 这个好不好?
**For 是:** 是不是 is commonly used and sounds very natural: 你是不是学生?
**When to use:** - In spoken Chinese when you want to sound natural and casual. - To ask whether a past event happened (V没V). - To ask about current state, habit, or intention (V不V).
**When NOT to use:** - NEVER add 吗 to a 正反问句 — this is the top learner error: 你去不去吗? is WRONG. - Do NOT use the full verb in the second position for two-syllable verbs — just repeat the key character: 喜欢不喜欢 → acceptable, but 喜不喜欢 is more colloquial.
**Comparison with 吗 question:** - 你累吗? and 你累不累? mean the same thing. - A-not-A sounds more natural in spoken Chinese. - 吗 questions are slightly more formal or written.
**Answering:** Just say the verb: 来 (yes) or 不来 (no). For V没V: 去了 or 没去.
