课程摘要
These four sentence-final particles add tone and nuance: 吗 turns statements into yes-no questions, 吧 softens suggestions or seeks confirmation, 呢 continues a line of questioning or marks an ongoing state, and 了 signals a new or changed situation.
Sentence-final modal particles (语气助词) sit at the end of a sentence and change its tone without changing the core meaning. Each particle has a distinct role:
吗 (ma): Converts a statement into a yes-no question. Used in questions that expect a simple yes or no. NEVER combine 吗 with question words like 什么, 哪, 谁 — that would be redundant. 你去吗? 你去哪里吗?
吧 (ba): (1) Softens a suggestion or invitation — 我们去吧 (Let's go). (2) Seeks confirmation of an assumption — 你是老师吧?(You're a teacher, right?). The tone is gentle and collaborative.
呢 (ne): (1) Ask-back follow-up — 我很好,你呢? (I'm fine, and you?). (2) Marks an ongoing or current state — 他在睡觉呢 (He's sleeping right now). (3) Asks about whereabouts — 你的书呢?(Where's your book?)
了 (le) sentence-final: Signals a change in situation — 下课了 (Class is over now), 他回来了 (He's back). This is DIFFERENT from the verb-suffix 了 that marks completed actions.
Common mistake: 吗 and 吧 are both used in questions but they differ in certainty. 你是老师吗? = genuinely asking. 你是老师吧? = fairly sure, seeking confirmation.
语法句型
Statement + 吗 → yes-no question
Turns any statement into a yes-no question. The speaker has no preconception — they are genuinely asking.
你是老师吗?
Nǐ shì lǎoshī ma?
Are you a teacher?
你明天有课吗?
Nǐ míngtiān yǒu kè ma?
Do you have class tomorrow?
语法句型
Statement + 吧 → suggestion or soft confirmation
吧 either softens a suggestion (Let's...) or seeks gentle confirmation of an assumption (right? I assume...).
我们走吧。
Wǒmen zǒu ba.
Let's go.
你饿了吧?
Nǐ è le ba?
You're hungry, right?
语法句型
Statement + 呢 → follow-up question / ongoing state
呢 follows up a question ('and you?'), asks about whereabouts, or emphasizes an ongoing situation.
我在吃饭呢。
Wǒ zài chīfàn ne.
I am eating right now.
我很好,你呢?
Wǒ hěn hǎo, nǐ ne?
I'm doing well. And you?
