课程摘要
The predicate is the core part of a sentence that tells what the subject does, what it is like, or what it equals. In Chinese, predicates can be verbs, adjectives, or even nouns (for time, age, nationality).
The predicate (谓语) is the part of a sentence that makes a statement about the subject. Without a predicate, you have no sentence — just a label.
Chinese predicates come in four main types: (1) Verbal predicate (动词谓语): the subject performs an action — 他去学校 (He goes to school). (2) Adjectival predicate (形容词谓语): the subject has a quality, but a degree adverb like 很 is usually required — 天气很好 (The weather is great). Saying 天气好 alone sounds like a comparison or surprised exclamation. (3) Nominal predicate (名词谓语): for time, age, price, or nationality without needing 是 — 今天星期一 (Today is Monday), 他二十岁 (He is 20 years old). (4) 是-sentence: for identity or classification — 她是老师 (She is a teacher).
A key rule: 很 can only modify adjectives used as predicates, NOT action verbs. You cannot say 他很去学校 — this is wrong. Instead say 他去学校 or 他经常去学校.
When building sentences, always ask: 'What kind of predicate does this sentence have?' That shapes everything else — whether you need 是, 很, or nothing at all.
