因为……所以…… (yīnwèi...suǒyǐ...) - HSK 2

Explanation

This pattern connects a cause and a result. The standard beginner order is 因为 + reason, 所以 + result. In daily speech, sometimes one part can be omitted if the meaning is clear, but the full pattern is best for HSK2 practice. Do not use 但是 when the second clause is a result. 但是 is for contrast, while 所以 introduces a result.

Shows cause and result: because of this, therefore that happens.

因为今天下雨，所以我们坐地铁。

Yīnwèi jīntiān xiàyǔ, suǒyǐ wǒmen zuò dìtiě.

Because it is raining today, we are taking the subway.

因为我有点儿累，所以想早点儿回家。

Yīnwèi wǒ yǒudiǎnr lèi, suǒyǐ xiǎng zǎo diǎnr huí jiā.

Because I am a little tired, I want to go home earlier.

因为这个饭馆比较近，所以我们在这儿吃。

Yīnwèi zhège fànguǎn bǐjiào jìn, suǒyǐ wǒmen zài zhèr chī.

Because this restaurant is fairly close, we will eat here.

Common Mistakes

Wrong: 因为今天下雨，但是我们坐地铁。 Correct: 因为今天下雨，所以我们坐地铁。
Wrong: 所以我们坐地铁，因为今天下雨。（初级表达） Correct: 因为今天下雨，所以我们坐地铁。
Wrong: 因为我很忙，所以我没有时间吗。 Correct: 因为我很忙，所以我没有时间。

Usage Notes

因为 introduces the reason; 所以 introduces the result.
For contrast, use 但是, not 所以.
In full HSK2 practice, keep the order 因为 reason, 所以 result.
