bìngliè fùjù
Coordinate compound sentence (并列复句)
A coordinate compound sentence joins two clauses that have equal status — two simultaneous actions (一边...一边...), two parallel facts (clause + clause), or shared qualities (也). Think of it as the 'and' sentence in Chinese.

He listens to music and does homework at the same time — two things happening together, and a coordinate sentence makes it crystal clear!

Ringkasan pelajaran
Formula: ① 一边...一边... (same subject, 2 simultaneous actions) ② Clause, Clause (parallel facts) ③ Clause, 也+Clause (shared quality). Meaning: two equal, parallel ideas. Key usage: use 一边...一边... only for ongoing simultaneous actions. Model sentence: 他一边听音乐,一边做作业。
A coordinate compound sentence (并列复句) links two clauses where neither is more important than the other. At HSK 1, there are three common forms:
1. 一边...一边... — two actions done at the same time by the same subject: 他一边走路,一边唱歌 (He walks and sings simultaneously). Both actions must be ongoing and doable at the same time.
2. Clause + Clause (juxtaposition) — two parallel facts or events with the same or different subjects: 爸爸做饭,妈妈看电视 (Dad cooks; Mom watches TV).
3. 也 — shows that something else is also true: 我喜欢唱歌,弟弟也喜欢唱歌 (I like singing; my brother also likes singing).
When NOT to use 一边...一边...: do not use it for two sequential actions (one after another). For that, use 先...再... or 然后. Also, do not use 一边...一边... for states or completed actions — it is for simultaneous ongoing actions.
Common learner trap: using 和 to connect two clauses. 和 connects nouns, not full clauses. Say 爸爸做饭,妈妈看电视 — NOT 爸爸和妈妈,做饭和看电视 (that changes the meaning entirely).

一边...一边... requires two ongoing simultaneous actions. 买了东西 is a completed action, not an ongoing one. Use two continuous actions.
和 connects nouns or noun phrases, not full clauses. For parallel clauses, use a comma to separate them, not 和.
